White Swamp is a small rural locality in the Tenterfield Shire of northern New South Wales, close to the Queensland border. Although little remains today, it was once a thriving timber settlement. I have been taking pictures of the only building still standing, where the village was located, for many years. There are no other ruins visible, this is not surprising as all structures were built from local timber. During a recent visit to the area I did manage to get the drone over what remains of the old Cemetery. It is on private grazing land and some distance from the old road.
Early settlement and timber industry.
White Swamp developed as a timber-getting community in the forests near Wilsons Peak and the headwaters of the Clarence River. The area supported a significant logging industry and, at its peak had:
- Several Sawmills
- Two general stores
- A Post Office
- A School
- A Cemetery
The settlement reportedly had a population of around 200 people during its most active period.
According to local historical accounts, White Swamp was named after the white flower heads of foxtail grass that were common throughout the valley.
As the timber industry declined and eventually ceased, the village gradually disappeared. The stores, school, post office, and mills closed, and the settlement largely vanished from maps. By the late twentieth century, little remained except White Swamp Road and the cemetery.
The White Swamp Cemetery survives as an important reminder of the former community. Restoration work was carried out in 2000, including replacement of the old timber-and-wire fencing with steel fencing. In 2006, the NSW Government reinstated White Swamp as a recognised rural locality.
White Swamp today
Today White Swamp is a sparsely populated rural locality rather than a village. Visitors travelling between the Scenic Rim region of Queensland and the Upper Clarence area of New South Wales can still follow the dirt White Swamp Road through the scenic valley.
I found a few historic newspaper references to White Swamp in northern NSW, mainly through Trove’s digitised newspaper archive.
- Public Hall Proposed at White Swamp (1907)
The Casino and Kyogle Courier and North Coast Advertiser reported on 26 June 1907 that residents were taking steps to build a public hall in White Swamp. The article states that local sawmill proprietors had promised donations of timber for the project, showing the importance of the timber industry to the community at that time.
There is no evidence of the project being completed.
All that is left of the old Cemetery… it must be surrounded by unmarked and lost graves.
