The New England Highway is an interesting drive in Northern NSW. It still has many of the small towns and farming communities that began appearing on the map from the early 1800’s. In these towns you will find plenty of the original buildings and supporting infrastructure. Unlike the famous Route 66 in the USA, where much of the original road, infrastructure and some small towns have all but disappeared.
North of Glen Innes you will find Deepwater, a small town with a population of approx. 400 people.
The original Deepwater run was set up by William Cooins in 1839 for the Windeyer brothers. By 1848 it covered 60,000 acres.
The railway station opened in 1886 followed by a Public School in 1894. Some of the old buildings are still standing including Deepwater Inn, Court House, Post Office, Picture Theatre, General Store and the Public School.
The highway is in good condition with many interesting stops regardless of driving from North or South.
