Nhill is a picturesque town in the Wimmera district in western Victoria. It is on the Western Highway, halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne.
At the 2016 census, the population was 2,184. Locals are mainly employed in farming or food processing of grain, fowl and ducks.
The area was first visited by Europeans in 1845. Later brothers Frank and John Oliver decided to build a flour mill on Crown land beside the Dimboola-Lawloit road, the township of Nhill grew from there. The Post Office opened in 1881 and Cobb and Co coaches serviced the town from 1883.
Nhill was the first Victorian town after the state capital, Melbourne, to be supplied with electricity in 1892.
It is a quaint town and well worth a stopover on the way to/from Sth Australia. The motels are clean and comfortable with good meals available at the pubs in the main street.
