The Byron Bay Lighthouse

Australia's most Eastern Cape.

Byron Bay Lighthouse

The Byron Bay Lighthouse, also known as the Cape Byron Lighthouse, is located on Cape Byron in New South Wales, Australia. It is one of Australia’s most iconic and beloved lighthouses, known for its rich history and scenic beauty.

Construction of the lighthouse began in 1899 and was completed in 1901. It was designed by Charles Harding, a renowned architect, and engineers Shepherd and Mortley. The lighthouse was built to guide ships along the treacherous coastline, as Byron Bay was an important maritime trading hub.

The Cape Byron Lighthouse is situated on the easternmost point of the Australian mainland, providing an excellent vantage point for ships entering or leaving the port of Ballina. With its distinctive white tower and red dome, it stands at an impressive height of 22 meters (72 feet).

Initially, the lighthouse used kerosene lamps with vaporized kerosene burners, producing a light beam visible up to a distance of 26 nautical miles (48 kms). However, it was converted to electric operation in 1956 and is still functioning today using solar power, making it the most powerful lighthouse in Australia.
