Kalbar in the Scenic Rim

Kalbar, Qld

Kalbar is a charming town located in the Scenic Rim region of Queensland, Australia. It has a rich history dating back to its establishment in the mid-19th century.

Kalbar was initially settled by German immigrants in the 1870s, who were attracted to the area’s fertile soil and beautiful landscapes. They named the town “Kalbar,” which means “nearby” or “close by” in the local Aboriginal language.

The early settlers in Kalbar primarily engaged in agriculture, with dairy farming and crop cultivation being their main occupations. The town quickly became known for its high-quality produce, including vegetables, fruits, and dairy products. Even today, the agricultural legacy is still visible in the region.

Over the years, Kalbar developed into a thriving community with various amenities like shops, schools, churches, and community organizations. The town’s growth was further facilitated by the extension of the railway line to Kalbar in 1911, which played a crucial role in transporting goods and connecting it to other nearby towns.

Unfortunately, a disastrous fire in February 1920 raised most of the buildings in Edward Street, including the original School of Arts hall. The Bickerton’s building which sits on the corner of Edward and George Streets is the only building on that side of the road to have survived the fire.

As with many towns, Kalbar was not immune to the effects of war. During World War II, the area played a significant role as a training ground for Australian and American troops. Soldiers were trained in the surrounding bushland, and many local families opened their homes to accommodate the troops.

In recent years, Kalbar has seen an increase in tourism, attracting visitors with its picturesque countryside, vibrant community events, and historic buildings. The town takes pride in preserving its heritage, with several old buildings still standing, including the iconic St. John’s Lutheran Church, which has become a local landmark.

The population of the town today is about 1500 people.
